Mick's Life

Mick would have lots of ideas and tried to make them happen by getting everyone involved. His favourite saying was one of Lloyd George, which he quoted often:  "The finest eloquence is that which gets things done."

He certainly lived by this.  Another quote he would often repeat; “Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little."

Many have said Mick worked at a 100mph, and is fitting given another favourite quote of his was that by Neil Armstrong;  “I believe every human has a finite number of heartbeats. I don’t intend to waste any of mine.”

He leaves a legacy that he himself would not boast, but through this website his family have highlighted a few.

In the 1990s Mick instigated the Llanfair Caereinion Town Forum which secured the town winning the Market Towns’ Initiative. He was also instrumental in setting up Montgomeryshire Rural Enterprise which secured £1.2m of European money to support innovation on farms in and around Montgomeryshire.

He held many elected positions in the NFU including representing Montgomeryshire on the UK Council. He had a particular interest in presenting a favourable image of farming and welcomed teachers and pupils to his farm, Rallt Ucha.

He instigated the first farming programme on Radio Maldwyn and helped set up the first Montgomeryshire branch of RABI in 1998. He was the Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Llanfair Caereinion and Banwy Valley.

In 1997 when devolution came to Wales,  Mick decided to throw his hat into the national arena. He represented Montgomeryshire up until 2011, during that time, he set up ‘Farming Connect’, introduced free school milk for younger pupils and led a campaign to ban plastic bags in Wales which was formally adopted as law and then England followed.

Mick enjoyed all social activities both in English and Welsh from local and national Eisteddfodau, shows, concerts and rugby games.

He loved sports and could talk about it for hours.  A  week before Mick died he was pleased to watch Man U defeat Liverpool!

Mick was a fantastic father and grand father. He loved a good party with old and new  friends and often was the last on the dance floor. He was a lifelong Bob Dylan fan, and could quote the lyrics to nearly all his songs. He never missed  a Dylan concert in the UK and attended one of his last concerts in Hyde park in 2019.

Mick loved painting, especially Moel Bentrych, a hill that faces Mick’s family home in Montgomeryshire. It’s also the picture drawn by Mick’s grandson Stanley which forms The Fund’s logo.

“Mick has left the party – the party of life. Although we have said our goodbyes, it will never feel as though the party is over. Mick will live on in our hearts and through our memories.”
